Hortensia Living

This London apartment was originally organised around a conventional developer layout that prioritised functions over experience. Despite its generous footprint, the home felt fragmented, with spaces that were clearly defined but rarely used to their full potential.

The client’s ambition was to create a home that felt more connected, intuitive, and inviting. Rather than adding square metres, the focus was placed on improving the quality of everyday living through a better balance between openness, comfort, and functionality.

Through a carefully curated palette of warm neutrals, rich timber finishes, tactile materials, and subtle statement elements, the apartment was transformed into a calm and contemporary home that feels cohesive from every angle.

Spatial Strategy

The key intervention was the removal of the existing room divider between the kitchen and living area. While it incorporated decorative niches, it interrupted sightlines and visually reduced the perceived size of the apartment. Replacing it with a multifunctional island established a stronger connection between the different living zones while introducing additional storage and informal seating.

The underutilised dining area was reimagined as a lounge retreat, creating a more versatile and personal living environment. This shift allowed the apartment to respond more closely to the client’s daily routines while improving the overall flow through the space.

To reinforce visual continuity, the original niche concept was reinterpreted within a bespoke integrated TV wall. Finished in the same timber tone as the kitchen cabinetry, the custom joinery creates a clear architectural connection between the various functions and helps unify the apartment as a single, coherent living environment.
